The French Monarchic State and the Family from the 16th to the 18th Century. From the 16th to the 18th century, in France, the policies of the French monarchy regarding the family, far from being "absolutist", were rather liberal. By taking into account the diversity of French customs and by reinforcing the stability of economic and social structures, these policies tended to freeze the geographical variety of family forms. Hostile to feudal clans and to the barons contesting its authority, the French monarchy sought to appeal to a new elite from the robe bourgeoisie, who often set up powerful networks strictly based on kinship within the state apparatus.
