The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of portfolios as a means of assessing writing and their subsequent use in a fourth grade classroom in which the students are engaged in a process writing program. To establish a theoretical base upon which portfolios can be implemented as part 2 of the assessment of writing, the professional literature will be reviewed.
