This study on engineering professionals has been produced at a crucial juncture in the history of engineering in South Africa. The country is embarking on a massive and very expensive expansion in infrastructure while at the same time facing a shortage of engineering capacity, particularly in the public sector, that has been described as one of the worst capacity and scarce skills crises in years. This chapter looks at the three main types of engineering professionals in South Africa.
