Paper presented at the Centre National De Recherche Scientifique Workshop, France, OctoberConducting research on the rights of women and children in South Africa, particularly from the perspective of their woeful under servicing, is a daunting task. On the face of it, it would seem that we in South Africa are very careless of the rights of our most vulnerable citizens. And yet in considering the" real" rights of women and children in this country (by which is meant those enshrined in law) we find that there is a raft of legislation, both domestic and international, as well as the Constitution and the National Action Plan on Human Rights, aimed at the protection of the human rights of women and children.
