Pierre Plchard The ordination hall in Thai monasteries Frequently sheltering the most important Buddha image, the ordination hall (ubosof) is today the principal building of a Thai monastery. This was not always the case: in the Sukhothai Kingdom, a stupa and a large main hall (vihan) mark the centre of most fourteenth-century monasteries, while the ordination hall, surrounded by its boundary stones (bai semas), is built away to one side or, when on the main axis, at some distance. The Ayutthaya monasteries (1351-1767) do not alter this pattern substantially. Only after the founding of Bangkok in 1782, the ordination hall takes its present prominence, often standing alone at the centre of a courtyard surrounded by a roofed gallery. Au XIVe siècle, dans le royaume de Sukhothai, les monastères sont généralement centrés sur un stupa associé au grand hall principal(vihari), et le hall d'ordination, distingué par les bornes rituelles (bai sema) qui l'entourent, se trouve écarté sur le côté, ou à quelque distance lorsqu'il est sur l'axe de l'ensemble. La configuration des grands monastères d'Ayutthaya (1351-1767) reste proche de ce modèle. Ce n'est qu'après la fondation de Bangkok en 1782 que le hall d'ordination, souvent implanté au centre d'une cour entourée d'une galerie couverte, prend son importance actuelle, qui s'est imposée dans tout le pays au détriment des anciennes variantes régionales.Pichard Pierre.
