Philippe Papin Geography and politics in Ancient Vietnam This article is concerned with the arrangement of the broad lines of power across Vietnam and with the manner in which the world of the plains and that of the mountains are articulated. Topography has played a huge role in the history of a country the epic of whose foundation is one of a separation between the mountain peoples, recipients of an ancient power, and those who, thanks to the use of metal, headed East to benefit from the delta of the Red River, rice-growing country then still being sealed up. Upon contact with China, in particular with the governor Gao Pian, the society of the plain defined new ways of governing, based in Ancient Hanoi but contested and endangered several times during the course of the country's history by the forces still active in the surrounding mountains. The incursion of the armies of the Nanzhao in the 9th century, the seizure of power by the Dinh a hundred years later, or even the fall of the Ly dynasty in the 13th century are possible illustrations; but many other events, less well-known because less decisive, befell them in the course of this long-lasting opposition. From the 14th century, however, the Vietnamese monarchy made efforts to integrate this outlying rebel society, holding places for its members in the mandarins' examinations and forming firm matrimonial alliances with the potentates of the foothills. In many respects, the birth of the bureaucratic state was a response to the necessity, for the crown, of controlling its own territory by trying to resolve the original partition of a country divided by geography.Philippe Papin Géographie et politique dans le Viêt-Nam ancien Cet article s'intéresse à la mise en place des grandes lignes de force de l'espace vietnamien et à la manière dont se sont articulés, ensemble, le monde des plaines et celui des montagnes. La topographie a joué en effet un rôle immense dans l'histoire d'un pays dont l'épopée fondatrice est celle de la séparation entre les peuples montagnards, dépositaires d'un pouvoir ancien, et ceux qui, grâce à l'usage du métal, se sont dirigés vers l'est afin de mettre en valeur le delta du fleuve Rouge, terre rizicole alors en cours de colmatage. Au contact de la Chine, et notamment du gouverneur Gao Pian, la société de la plaine a défini de nouveaux modes de gouverner, enchâssés dans l'ancienne Hanoi, mais qui, à plusieurs reprises dans l'histoire du pays, ont été contestés et mis en péril par les forces encore actives du pourtour montagneux. L'irruption des armées du Nanzhao au IXe siècle, la conquête du pouvoir par les Dinh, cent ans plus tard, ou même la chute de la dynastie des Ly au XIIIe siècle, sont des illustrations possibles, mais de nombreux autres événements, moins connus parce que moins décisifs, se sont eux aussi insérés dans cette opposition de longue durée. Dès le XIVe siècle pourtant, la monarchie vietnamienne s'est employée à intégrer cette société périphérique et rebelle, réservant à ses membres des places aux concours mandarinaux et passant de solides alliances matrimoniales avec les potentats des marches. À bien des égards, la naissance de l'État bureaucratique a été une réponse à la nécessité, pour la couronne, de contrôler son propre territoire en tâchant de résoudre la partition originelle d'un pays géographiquement divisé.Papin Philippe.
