Abstract « Bédé kaba': The last Patani cannons. A Jawi commemorative custom (Malays of Southern Thailand ») The present three Thai provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat in southern peninsular Thailand made up long ago the famous sultanate of Patani. In their population, the Jawi, muslims and Malay in origin, predominate. In spite of the disappearance of this sultanate as a political entity, they commemorate every year the greatness of their past during the hari rayo festivals. In these circumstances they fire bamboo cannons loaded with carbide in remembrance of the giant cannons which were the glory of this sultanate.Le Roux Pierre.
