Realization and management of wide-area measuring networks are an important part of environment protection. Using the example of hydrological measurements in Baden-Württemberg, architecture and basic functions of these types of networks are discussed. The concept incorporates three main layers, namely communication level, information level and basic application services. This structure of the system provides a powerful platform to support a broad range of applications
