Biodegradable and photodegradable plastics are discussed with respect to the burden on the environment. The following matters, among other things, are examined: modification of natural and synthetic polymers, water-solubility, hydrolyzation, degradation of intercalated particles, e. g. starch, by micro-organisms, then breaking up of the embrittled skeletal structure by atmospheric influences, working life and safety of plastics in packaging, fields of application in medicine, in the hygiene sphere, various demands, also by the legislator, on an package in the food sector, in adequate barrier properties, critical interactions. Many questions still need clarification, before degradable plastics can be used for food packaging
