Transparent insulation materials (TIM) are a passive technology. With TIM-technology solar-energy can by used for space heating in new and existing buildings. The demonstration project "Sonnenäckerweg/Freiburg" involved retrofitting a double-storey residential house (8 apartments, 400 square meter floor area) built in 1950 with TIM. The south-east and south-west facades were covered with TI-Elements (120 square meter aperture area) and opaque insulation was installed on the other exterior surfaces. The windows and TI-Elements were equipped with rollerblinds for sun and heat protection. We began monitoring the building once it was occupied in Dec. '89.
