It is important to understand optical nonlinearities in Silicon and Gallium Nitride to take advantage and reap benefits of their implementations in optical devices used in telecommunication networks. This research is focussed on investigation and reviewing the optical nonlinear properties of Silicon and Gallium Nitride waveguides and how these nonlinearities can be used in the realization of preferably all-optical ultra-fast devices in the next generation integrated optics. The research related to optical lasing, optical switching, data modulation, optical signal amplification and photo-detection using Gallium Nitride devices based on waveguides is examined.
