This paper presents a multigrid approach using adaptive local refinements for the two-dimensional simulation of semiconductor devices. Careful modifications and extensions are necessary to ensure robustness and to achieve usual multigrid efficiency utilizing really coarse grids. The employed modified Full Approximation Scheme, nested iteration technique, and the adaptive local refinement scheme are discussed. Precise resolution of very thin layers on coarse grids is facilitated by the introduction of CONSTRAINT gridlines. The developed multigrid approach has been implemented into the software system MAGIC for the simulation of arbitrary semiconductor devices. Some numerical results are presented
