For the downstream processing in fermentation and enzymatic processes, electrodialysis can be used very efficiently. It is shown that bipolar membrane technique is a very economic way for the separation of organic acids like itaconic acid, gluconic acid, citric acid and methionine. Different parameters and process designs are demonstrated. A new module system makes it possible to involve electrodialysis in sterile processes
