Process for the surface treatment of workpieces (12) by means of laser beams (10) by heating edge layers, in particular for the treatment of vehicle shafts. The process involves a laser beam which impinges at an angle of incidence deviating from 0 onto the workpiece surface (13) in an oblong beam area (14) and moves transversely relative to this. In order to work at high process speeds and obtain high quality, the process uses linear polarized laser radiation (10) and its angle of incidence (<-3 ) of the remaining areas (e.g. 16) of the beam area (14)
