The use of fuzzy sets in pattern recognition enables for a new approach to surface inspection. This is especially convenient if the surfaces to be classified are not clearly distinguishable. The method is characterized by using a multivariate parametric membership function for fuzzy classes and has been already applied to solve various problems of diagnostics and process monitoring
