This paper describes recent development work at the IPA to apply Virtual Reality technology originally developed for the control of industrial robots to endoscopic surgery. The work has focused on three critical aspects of endoscopic surgery: to give the surgeon precise control of surgical instruments; to give the surgeon an optimal view of the operation site; and the advance simulation of operations. The paper also describes how scanned patient data, such as Computer Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), can be used in Virtual Reality systems.
