In a process and a device for measuring the flow velocity of a gas or a liquid, a signal changing with time is applied between two electrodes which are electrically isolated from the gas or the liquid, whereby space charges formed in the gas or in the liquid in the vicinity of the electrodes are displaced and image charges are recharged between conductive regions of the electrodes. This leads to a measuring current and the time interval between the change in voltage and the change in measuring current caused by the change in voltage is measured and the flow velocity is derived therefrom
