The principles of the ATR technique for FTIR-spectroscopy are shown. The application for the analysis of polyethylene and polypropylene surfaces penetrated by fluorination and oxifluorination is discussed. It could be shown that aging effects and the reaction of the treated surfaces with model adhesives is detectible by the ATR technique
