The invention relates to a catalytic oxidation reactor for two reaction gases which are combustible when mixed. The reactor contains a gas-permeable layer coated with catalysts, said gas-permeable layer being made in the shape of a container and linked to a first line for a first reaction gas and the oxidation reactor being provided with a second line for the second reaction gas. The invention also relates to a process for operating this type of oxidation reactor
