The application of high temperature ceramics requires a proper knowledge of material behaviour. To study damage mechanisms, a special laser based testing method was developed. Thermal shock and thermal cycling experiments on silicon nitride were performed, whereby the maximum temperatures were low enough that only elastic material behaviour must be taken into account.
