The detection of macroscopic defects in materials such as cracks is the main task in nondestructive testing. Another traditional tropic in NDT is the characterization of material properties and the microstructure of materials or the measurement of residual or external stresses. Methods for nondestructive materials characterization are available for on-line control of production processes for quality assurance or for the inspection of components. In recent years there was a progress for methods which are usable for the characterization of materials and materials structures in materials labs for the development of new materials.
