Measurements of global spectral irradiance in the UV and visible range were carried out during December 1995 and January 1996 in Townsville, Australia (19.33 deg S, 146.76 deg E, 30 m above sea level (asl)) using the mobile spectroradiometer of the Fraunhofer Institute for Atmospheric Environmental Research, Germany. These are, to our knowledge, the first reported spectral UV measurements in the tropics of Australia. For cloudless days, the spectral measurements are consistent with results of a radiative transfer model. In the UVA, measurement and model agree within ¤10 per cent for solar elevations above 10 degree.
