The device has a transmitter (1) for sending light towards the medium (4), a carrier body (11) which is optically transparent for the light from the transmitter with an internal hollow space (5) for the medium, and a receiver (8) for the light which has passed through the medium. There is a reflecting device (6) which causes the light to pass through the medium several times before reaching the receiver. The carrier body is a transparent bubble block (3). The transmitter transmits divergent light which impinges on a surface (2) of the block and passes through the walls of the hollow space and the medium.
