Abstract Erosion control based on forest vegetation, which mitigates torrential hazards and the silting of hydroelectric reservoirs, is currently a major concern for land managers in the southern French Alps. Recent studies, conducted at several sites of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (France), aim towards a better understanding of the influence of forest vegetation on the sediment delivery of marly terrain at different spatial scales (slope, gully and basin). These studies show that forest vegetation not only plays a part in soil protection, but in sediment trapping upstream of plant barriers.
