Les espaces publics, capital social / Public Space and Social Capital

At a time when urban centres have been metamorphosed and the private sector has monopolized urban development through the shopping malls found almost everywhere in the world, this text deals with the future of public spaces. Throughout history, public spaces have represented, in addition to their aesthetic value, a social capital which has to be identified to be reinvented. Two suggestions are made to contribute to the coherence and viability of the urban entity. First, the reinvestment of these spaces by the public sector and second, the conceptualisation by geographers and social scientists of the complementary between public spaces, relating to built and natural environments.A l'heure où la ville s'est métamorphosée et où le secteur privé tend à monopoliser la fonction d'urbanité sous la forme de centres commerciaux - que l'on retrouve presque partout dans le monde -, ce texte pose la question du devenir des espaces publics. En effet les espaces publics ont représenté, tout au long de l'histoire, un capital social, outre leur valeur esthétique, qu'il convient d'identifier pour le réinventer. Il est suggéré d'une part leur réinvestissement par le secteur public et d'autre part un sérieux effort des sciences sociales et de la géographie pour conceptualiser et imaginer la complémentarité entre la multiplicité des espaces publics d'essence minérale et d'essence végétale afin de contribuer à la cohérence et à la visibilité de l'urbain.Ghorra-Gobin Cynthia.
