The apparatus has a video camera (1) to which is connected a downstream image analysis unit (2). The image analysis unit (2) is arranged to automatically carry out a grey level analysis of the image of the level crossing observed by the video camera (1), to detect objects of at least a predetermined minimum size in the dangerous area. The image analyser (1) may carry out an individual image analysis for object detection, in which several test lines are provided transverse to the tracks. The grey level profile of an individual image is detected along each test line. The images are smoothed to eliminate the narrow grey level pulses.
