The notion of a 'major river' is analysed using a series of interrelated criteria, and is applied to a number of actual cases : Nile, Amazon, Yangtse-kiang, Mississippi and Saint Lawrence. For each of these rivers, the author considers the uses of the resource, the pressure that it has to support and the priority actions for environmental management.
