A layer system, for coating corrosion-susceptible metal substrates, consists of an intermediate layer of one or more metal oxides and a functional layer of one or more 4-6 subgroup metal nitrides, carbonitrides and/or oxynitrides, preferably titanium or chromium nitride. Also claimed is a process for producing the above layer system, in which the intermediate layer and the functional layer are applied by the same coating method, preferably PVD, especially sputtering.
