The following essay is concerned with the study of event-based monitoring of distributed real-time systems. First of all, the basic principals are explained and evaluated. This includes the discussion of occuring problems and possible solutions. The next section introduces known methods for instrumenting distributed systems and compares them to each other. After this introductory part, the requirements of a monitoring tool are derived and discussed in detail. Furthermore, the applications of such a monitoring tool are illustrated. After this, a prototype is designed and introduced. In this context the components of the monitoring tool and their realization are also explained
