In this publication a new application for LIBS is presented. Steel cleanness analysis, i. e. the detection of inclusions and segregations in steel, is an important tool for quality assurance and quality improvement in steel production. A sample is scanned by a narrowly focused pulsed laser beam with a step width of 10 µm and a resolution of 1 µm. The resulting element-specific plasma radiation is acquired in the range of 130 to 777 nm by a Paschen-Runge spectrometer. In contrast to other measuring techniques savings due to easier sample preparation, shorter measuring times and lower costs are possible.
