This article offers an analysis of the poem ‘Tübingen, juli’ from the volume Buigzaamheden by Jan Lauwereyns. Starting form a reflection on the reading process and the distinction between two types of meaning made by Derrida and Riffaterre, two ways of attributing meaning are being investigated. This results in two divergent readings of the poem, which both have a poetical counterpart: one reading is referential and is based on a poetics of mimesis, the other is intertextual and concerns a poetics that considers the poem to be a producer of significance.
