The article deals with a study of chromatic dispersion in NZ-DS optical fibres. It reports on the use of optimised fibre pairs and short-period dispersion-managed cables. Fibre dispersion characteristics are defined, and dispersion properties for various types of glass fibres are plotted over the wavelength range 1300 to 1600 nm. This leads to statements of the maximum range for uncompensated fibre transmission systems as follows: for 17 ps/nm/km fibre the range is from 29 km at 10 Gbit/sec, down to 0.11 km at 160 Gbit/sec. For 4 ps/nm/km fibres, the ranges are stated to be more than four times greater
