Olfactometers were developed in order to measure and evaluate odor emissions in the outdoor environment. Olfactometry nowadays is indispensable for registering odor problems in the outdoor air. For example it is used to determine efficiency levels in odor reduction technology or as a starting platform for the computation of odor propagation. As yet, olfactometry has not played an important role in indoor environments as the concentrations of odorants in the indoor environment are present mostly to a much lesser extent than in outdoor environments.
