This paper reviews the literature that analyses network economies and cooperation, specially in the field of innovation. First, main concepts are defined and studied, both from the perspective of the transactional costs theory and from the network economic theory. Afterwards, the different functions of networks are presented, and the main reasons for their failure are studied. Finally, it conciders the importance of spatial dimension in network colaboration, and summarises the main characteristics of high-tech networks
