Ethnies et État en Côte-d'Ivoire

When dealing with contemporary Africa, it is customary to contrast the ethnie sphere and the social transformation processes brought about by colonization and continued by the independent states. Between these two poles, nothing or almost nothing seems to make it possible to apprehend the national entities as such, as if the weight of traditions and the shortcomings of modernity mode them unsubstantial. The Ivory Coast provides a counter example to this common political sociology model. An Ivorian identity can be detected provided that the major rôle played by the colonial state in the constitution of the ethnie aspect is taken into account ; that it is analysed concomitantly with the economie and political transformations of the global society ; and that it is shown that the ethnie groups, under the impact of these transformations, participated in the emergence of an Ivorian identity and of the state which is in charge of it.A propos de l'Afrique contemporaine, il est d'usage d'opposer la sphère des ethnies aux processus de transformations sociales provoqués par la colonisation et poursuivis par les Etats indépendants. Entre ces deux pôles, rien ou presque ne semble permettre d'appré­hender les entités nationales en tant que telles, comme si le poids des traditions et les insuffisances de la modernité avaient pour effet de les frapper d'inconsistance. La Côte-d'Ivoire fournit un contre-exemple à ce modèle courant de sociologie politique. Une identité ivoirienne peut être discernable, mais à la condition de prendre la mesure du rôle majeur qu'a joué l'Etat colonial dans la constitution du fait ethnique ; d'analyser celui-ci concomitamment aux transformations économiques et politiques de la société globale ; et de montrer ainsi, qu'informées par elles, les ethnies ont participé à la genèse d'une identité ivoirienne et de l'Etat qui en a la charge.Chauveau Jean-Pierre, Dozon Jean-Pierre.
