At the end of the 19th century political science took on in France a new meaning : a real scientific discipline was emerging. The field of political research was then highly complex and thé object of the discipline was disputed and contested. While the term "political" had at that time a specifie meaning (related to the government of a state), the expression "political science " remained blurry. There were " the sciences of the State " as taught at the Ecole libre des Sciences politiques. There was a doctrinal political science, at tintes not very différent from the history of political ideas, and which met with the competition of social philosophy, for some time dominant. There were the " cameralistic sciences ", which soon ceased claiming that they were related to political science or political law, and became "public law". The change was to corne from the confrontation of political science and real history. This will be studied in the second part.A la fin du 19e siècle en France, la science politique prend un sens nouveau : une véritable discipline scientifique est en cours d'émergence. Le champ des recherches politiques est alors d'une grande complexité, et l'objet de la discipline est disputé et contesté. Si le mot «politique» a, à cette époque, un sens bien spécifié (est politique ce qui est relatif au gouvernement d'un Etat), l'expression «science politique» demeure incertaine. Il y a les «sciences d'Etat» telles qu'elles peuvent être enseignées à l'Ecole libre des sciences politiques. Il y a une science politique doctrinale qui parfois se distingue peu de l'histoire des idées politiques et qui rencontre la concurrence de la philosophie sociale, un temps dominante. Il y a les sciences «camérales» qui bientôt vont cesser de se réclamer de la science politique ou du droit politique pour se ranger sous l'appellation «droit public». Le changement viendra de la confrontation de la science politique et de l'histoire réelle qui sera étudiée dans une seconde partie.Favre Pierre.
