THE DYNAMICS OF STRIKES, by HUGUES LAGRANGE The conflict potential in a branch of industry is linked to the degree of concentration of the workers in large scale companies and evolves over time. This evolution is globally parallel to that of the active population involved in the given branch of industry. However, and this has been shown recently in the crisis in the steel industry in France, demographic decline has its counter-part in unionised and concentrated industrial branches in outbreaks of strikes unexperienced in those industrial branches where concentration and unionisation are low. This explains the phenomenon observable in recent years in the rise of industrial conflict in modem sectors of industry, namely that those branches affected by the decline in employment experience strike movements which take on the character of serious social problems. Cette évolution est globalement parallèle à celle de la population active de la branche. Cependant, comme on l'a vu encore récemment à propos de la crise de la sidérurgie, le déclin démographique se traduit, dans les branches syndiquées et concentrées, par des flambées de grèves que ne connaissent pas les branches peu concentrées ou peu syndiquées. Cela explique que l'on constate, dans les années récentes, face à la montée des conflits dans les secteurs modernes, le développement, dans les branches touchées par le déclin de l'emploi, des mouvements de grèves qui prennent le caractère de drames sociaux.
