THE DYNAMICS OF STRIKES, by HUGUES LAGRANGE The conflict potential in a branch of industry is linked to the degree of concentration of the workers in large scale companies and evolves over time. This evolution is globally parallel to that of the active population involved in the given branch of industry. However, and this has been shown recently in the crisis in the steel industry in France, demographic decline has its counter-part in unionised and concentrated industrial branches in outbreaks of strikes unexperienced in those industrial branches where concentration and unionisation are low.
