THE LEBANON AND PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE, by ELISABETH STEMER-PICARD Lebano/Palestinian relations since 1968 represent only a modest vicissitude in the turbulent history of the Near East, but they do constitute an original and, in some ways, illustrative case ; the armed confrontation between two members of the Arab community, a State and a resistance organisation, is harmful to the much needed Arab solidarity in face of the Israeli enemy. While Tel-Aviv's role as a detonator is obvious, the two Super Powers are also demonstrating their de facto collusion in the Near East ; their indirect interventions tend to protect the State of Lebanon and curb the Resistance so as to maintain the status quo in the area.
