Les structures électorales de la gauche : élections présidentielles et élections législatives, 1965-1974

THE ELECTORAL STRUCTURES OF THE LEFT : PRESIDENTIAL AND PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS 1965-1974, by JÉRÔME JAFFRÉ and JEAN RANGER Separated as they are by a period of almost ten years, the 1965 and 1974 Presidential elections show that, although at very différent levels and in spite of some internal movements, there are strong similarities in the structures of the left-wing electorate, the bulk of which is gathered in support of the same candidate — Mr. François Mitterrand. It is not so much a different as a strengthened Left. If, on the other hand, one considers the three intervening Parliamentary elections, it is apparent that the Parliamentary Left and the Presidential Left belong to two different registers. The similarity of the structures is not very marked and, above all, is no more so at the start of the period (1965-1967) than at the end (1973-1974). The two trends — Parliamentary and Presidential — only coïncide to a small extent ; the two types of vote are still quite separate and even antithetical. François Mitterrand. Il s'agit moins d'une gauche différente que d'une gauche renforcée. En revanche, si l'on prend en considération les trois scrutins législatifs intermédiaires, on constate que gauche législative et gauche présidentielle s'inscrivent dans deux registres différents. La coïncidence des structures n'est pas fortement marquée et, surtout, ne l'est pas davantage à la fin de la période (1973-1974) qu'au début (1965-1967). Les deux évolutions — législative et présidentielle — ne se recoupent que très partiellement : les deux types de scrutin sont encore nettement distincts, voire irréductibles l'un à l'autre.
