The new politics, the campaign of Georges Pompidou and Alain Poher, by Jean and Monica Charlot The election campaigns of the two major candidates in the June 1969 presidential election bear witness to a desire to rationalize important decisions: nomination, image and media selection, organization and rhythm of the campaign. Neither Mr. Pompidou nor Mr. Poher had recourse to political campaign consultants - as Mr. Lecanuet did in 1965 - and both denied that their campaigns were "american-styled"; this did not however mean that they neglected modern means of propaganda - ranging from the opinion poll to the jet tour. Nonetheless their respective campaigns were less under the sign of the new politics than focused on their diverging conceptions...
