The formation of thermal contrast for flash-induced thermography is discussed based on a numerical model calculation. Characteristic points in the thermal decay curve are labelled. Similar considerations are explicated for lock-in thermography. Typical signal processing steps are shown and illustrated based on test measurements. An outlook is given for latest approaches like polynomial expansion or numerical filtering
