Pavane for a defunct ex-East German history, Gérald Chaix. Germany's reunification has dramatic social conséquences. In the universities of ex-East Germany, especially among historians, particularly numerous because of the legitimizing function history played, the advocates of the previous regime are trying to save their jobs although the overall record seems negative. While the old structures, in particular the Academy of Sciences, are being dismantled, debate is raging in Germany on the achievements of East German historiography.
