Modelling and optimizing a sustainable waste management system

Implementing an efficient solid waste management system (SWMS) is a challenging task. With the increase in global population and consumption patterns, solid waste management systems have become of global concern. The current work considers a real-world waste collection, recycling, treatment and disposal system. It looks into the different optimization problems associated with solid waste management to come up with an integrated management system. It aims at developing a system which helps cities manage their wastes efficiently and in a sustainable manner. The models built for the current research are based on unsorted wastes, which makes it more challenging. These are different from models surveyed in literature which rely on separation at source. The current work aims at utilizing the concept of supply chain design and management in an attempt to develop a sustainable system, especially, for developing cities. The system aims thus at estimating the costs required to achieve the environmental objectives and sets a fair cost that a citizen should pay to be able to sustain a clean environment.Implementing an efficient solid waste management system (SWMS) is a challenging task.
