NOVELTY - In a plasma spray coating process, a continuous laser beam (3) is directed through the spray jet (2), with a predetermined interaction time, directly onto the surface of the substrate (5) or an already applied layer to cause fusion. USE - For applying metal, metal alloy, hard carbide material and/or ceramic (e.g. alpha -alumina) coatings for improving the properties, e.g. hardness and wear and corrosion resistance, of substrates. ADVANTAGE - The process provides high rate deposition of dense adherent coatings onto a wide variety of substrates and allows controlled modification of the layer structure being formed
