Not only does Heine employ Hellenized and Homeric German in his «North Sea» poems, but, in «The Gods of Greece», published some 40 years after Schiller wrote his poem of the same name in 1788, Heine evokes, through the story of Prometheus, pantheism and sensualism, the conflict between ancient paganism and Christianity. The question arises of where he stands in relation to German classicism and, in particular, to Goethe, «the great pagan». More generally, Heine contrasts the supposed unity of ancient Greek society and the clear, synthetic «Greek vision» brought to life by Goethe and Napoleon with the malaise of the modem, divided «romantic» world.
