Translation plays a crucial part in Baudelaire's work. A survey of his translation of Thomas De Quincey 's Confessions of an Opium-Eater allows us to observe how Baudelaire has worked out some of his paradigms (thyrsus, palimpsest, fugue, « involutes »), as well as some essential notions (the «modem» art, the poem in prose, the criticism of poetical lyrism, the ghost's tone, the abstraction). The project of translation concerns an autobiographical fiction : this is not at all fortuitous, and we examine the close connections between the notion of elective rhythm and autobiography.
