Baudelaire, traducteur de Thomas De Quincey, une prosaïque comparée de la modernité

Translation plays a crucial part in Baudelaire's work. A survey of his translation of Thomas De Quincey 's Confessions of an Opium-Eater allows us to observe how Baudelaire has worked out some of his paradigms (thyrsus, palimpsest, fugue, « involutes »), as well as some essential notions (the «modem» art, the poem in prose, the criticism of poetical lyrism, the ghost's tone, the abstraction). The project of translation concerns an autobiographical fiction : this is not at all fortuitous, and we examine the close connections between the notion of elective rhythm and autobiography. We deliberately did not take litterally the speech which, in Baudelaire, enhances the effects of opium and the opium-addict's art - even though this is one of the anchorage points of the reflexive commentary in Les Paradis artificiels - in order to throw the light on the baudelairian myth of opium in the translation itself, and thus to set this myth (or ideology) against the work of translation, point by point. The research of the theory invented by the baudelairian translation leads to the «dependent imagination» which is at the core of the notion of «prosaïsation», or of the «prosaïcity» of the poem; but, on an other hand, and in an opposite way, the baudelairian anti-digressive strategy, resolutely favouring the brevity of verse, decides of the closeness between prose and poetry. The ironical meaning of such a closeness is reconsidered, firstly, at the light of the theory developed by Michel Charles in his Introduction à l'étude des Textes, and then of some concealed references to Wordsworth, Coleridge and Kant. The work of translation, by its cutting and deconstructive effects, opens a pathfor the criticism the theory of symbolic art already there in Baudelaire.La traduction occupe une place centrale dans l'œuvre de Baudelaire. À partir d'un examen de la traduction des Confessions d'un mangeur d'opium anglais de Thomas De Quincey, on observe comment Baudelaire a élaboré certains de ses paradigmes (thyrse, palimpseste, fugue, involute), et certains concepts essentiels (l'art «moderne», le poème en prose, la critique du lyrisme poétique, le «ton du revenant», l'abstraction). Le projet de traduction concerne une fiction autobiographique : ce n'est pas un hasard, et nous examinons les liens étroits qui existent entre l'idée de rythme électif et l'autobiographie. Nous avons choisi de ne pas prendre le discours qui, chez Baudelaire, valorise l'effet de l'opium et l'art opiomane, au pied de la lettre -alors même qu'il constitue un des points d'ancrage du commentaire réflexif des Paradis -, afin de mettre en abîme le mythe baudelairien de l'opium dans la traduction baudelairienne, et d'opposer point par point le mythe (ou l'idéologie) de l'opium et le travail de la traduction. Chercher la théorie inventée par la traduction baudelairienne fait découvrir l' « imagination dépendante» qui est au centre de l'idée de la prosaïsation, ou de la prosaïcité du poème; par ailleurs, et de manière contradictoire, la stratégie anti-digressive, résolument en faveur de la brièveté du vers, décide chez Baudelaire de la proximité entre prose et poésie. Le sens ironique de cette proximité est réexaminé à partir de la théorie de Michel Charles dans son Introduction à l'étude des textes (Le Seuil), puis des références cachées à Wordsworth, Coleridge, et Kant. Le travail de traduction, par ses effets de coupure et de déconstruction, ouvre la voie de la critique de la théorie de l'art symbolique qui existe chez Baudelaire.Dayre Éric.
