Describing the Economic Cycle Jacky Fayolle This paper presents and comments the descriptive techniques currently used by the OECD in cyclical analysis. This set of techniques is interesting from at least two points of view. First, the methodology is based upon former research in the field, particularly that of the NBER, dating back to the beginning of the century; it synthesises and enlarges them. Second, this synthesis can be homogeneously applied to all OECD countries. Therefore, it can be considered as representative of the frame of mind of those economists who read the current economic developments as largely reflecting business cycles.
