In the current situation, growth in overall demand can no longer be used as the principal remedy to fight against unemployment ; nor can its contraction be used to fight inflation effectively. The international integration of world economies means that isolated attempts at starting up a given national economy again might provoke a large commercial balance deficit ; it will probably lead to a too large exportation of capital as well. Public and private debt are to a point where they can no longer be enlargened. The production apparatus responds poorly to new demand, and the various anticipations of different economic actors all contribute to the end result of making Keynesian polices miss their targets.
