The present article examines the emergence of new forms of oligopolistic market competition in the context of a globalized world economy. It proposes that this process be analyzed in terms of two broad categories : traditional oligopolies in which individual firms use size and stocks of knowledge embodied in patents and licenses to structure existing markets and new knowledge based networked oligopolies in which interfirm alliances serve to shape technological trajectories and hence opportunities in markets overtime. The article builds its argument on the basis of an analysis of the development ofthe digital audiovisual equipment industry.
