An economic analysis of technical progress should basically aim at the process of change in which the single firm, or the economy as a whole absorb the technical novelty. Furthermore, technical progress may enter the existing productive structure, or on the contrary, chang it significantly. The consequences for the rate of growth, production and unemployment are accordingly very different. This calls in our opinion upon an inductive research needed to assume external consistency. The particular study of the Chemical industry seems with this respect to reveal the on-going forms of technical progress as well as growth instability to which they are associated.
